Excerpt: NAC: Alive, Though Not Kicking

The high expectations surrounding this market were dashed by complexity and elevated implementation costs. Those still considering NAC are driven by compliance needs and the desire for better access control, while many others are pausing to evaluate the next wave of products and technologies.

On the vendor front, not surprisingly, we saw increased interest in the NAC frameworks from Cisco and Microsoft, driven largely by their strong ties to the enterprise. With more than 20 vendors in the NAC market, many of them start-ups competing for the same dollars, consolidation is a near-term reality.

Caymas Systems closed its doors in 2007,Vernier Networks (now known as Autonomic Networks) is looking to get out of the NAC space, and Lockdown Networks closed down in March.

Fifty-five percent are either planning implementations or are in the evaluation process. The share of companies with no plans to use NAC is up as well, though, from 15% in 2007 to 23% in 2008.This is a fairly typical cycle, where early adopters rush to deploy a new technology, followed by a slower period, where more conservative organizations evaluate the products against their needs and spending priorities.
